화살나무는 산기슭이나 산 중턱의 암석지에 나는 낙엽관목. 키 3m 가량. 잔가지에 2~4줄의 날개가 있음. 잎은 호생, 타원형, 도란형, 끝이 뾰족하며, 길이 3~5cm, 뒷면에 털이 거의 없고, 회록색, 가장자리에 날카로운 잔톱니가 있음. 꽃은 황록색, 지름 10mm 가량, 4수성, 잎겨드랑이에 보통 3송이씩 취산화서로 달림. 열매는 삭과, 붉은색으로 익고, 1~4실. 씨는 흰색, 황적색 가종피에 싸임.
